HOW TO DRAW FACES
In this tutorial, we'll learn how to draw faces. It's not as hard as you"d think it would be, if you just learn to break what you are drawing into different parts. If you are trying to draw something as a complete whole, well you might have some trouble unless you're pretty experienced. If you draw one thing at a time (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hair) you'll do it faster and easier than normally. Take time to learn how to draw each feature of the face, and then go back later and put them all together.

First things first, the eye. The eye is the most important feature of the face. Why? Well, look at somebody and tell me what's the first thing you look at on their face. You always stare into a person's eyes. Eyes can show tons of emotion, so it's important that you know how they work. The image to the right was done by the famous artist named M.C. Escher. I just put it up here for you to get a better reference of an eye.

Ok, of course you already know that an eye is a sphere, it's completely round like a ball, with the optic nerves stemming out from behind and connecting to your brain. The top eye there shows the entire eyeball behind the eyelids. You didn't realize it was that big huh? The bottom eye shows just what you see when you look at a person. The eyeball pushes the lids of the eye out a bit, and that"s what you need to learn to draw. Over and beneath the eyes, there will the a buldge, remember to draw that.

Here is a sideview of what's going on. The eye reaches back pretty far in there don't it? I know the picture is a little weird looking, that"s my fault, I drew it a little off hehe.

Here's some angry eyes. Notice that, when you scowl like this, your eyebrows come down near the front and go up in the back. this causes the skin near your nose to bunch up, which partly covers your eyes. Not only that, but your cheeks come up a little, and make your eyes squit too.

Here's some closed eyes, like the person is in pain. Just do what you did for the angry eyes, only make them totally closed and add more wrinkles. Use this picture for reference. In a chatroom you might use a symbol like this    >_<    to make a squinting face.

I drew these kinda dumb but you get the idea. If you're suprised, your eyes open wide and your eyebrows go way up.

When drawing females, the eyes need eyelashes. You can try drawing eyelashes on male figures if you want, but I promise you it'll make him look like a woman. Anyhow, you thicken the eyelashes up towards the outer corner of the eye, and more on the top eyelid than the bottom. It"s pretty simple.

Ah, and finally we have crying eyes. The eyebrows lower on the ends and raise up near the nose. The tears actually flood into the eyes and cover up near half of the pupil, which makes the eye look wavy and especialy shiny. Make sure to add extra lighting effects in the iris. You can do the tears however you like, but if you want to be more realistic, make sure not to draw the trail, only draw the tear itself and try shading in the stream that the tear left.

Remember, if you're having trouble with eyes, you should practice drawing ONLY the eyes and not anything else. The more you draw the eyes, the more you'll start focusing on the parts you were getting wrong and you"ll improve your drawings a whole lot.
